We collaborated with Thoughtware Worldwide to study objectively the breadth and depth of productivity improvement our products bring to our customers. Their report, available in compressed form here, and in its full length here, details how the results were achieved.
Here's an excerpt from the press release:
"What began as an initiative to migrate from microfiche to a digital archiving solution has become the foundation for widespread process improvements and millions of dollars in cost savings annually at over 120 departments at the University of Miami," said Jim Balter, Senior Business Systems Analyst. "For over ten years, RSD has helped us reduce operating costs for antiquated systems, repurpose physical office space for more strategic university uses, reduce paper consumption by 90%, and permanently improve productivity by eliminating time lost associated with physical archive document retrieval."
Gotta love replacing microfiche. The fiche vendors are pretty well extinct by now.
This reminds me of when I was in sales for an electronic archival company and we replaced an in-house fiche operation that was based upon 12 microfiche machines.
The client (large credit card processor) saved millions and the fiche vendor was shown the door. Now it seems most of these systems are also responsible for storing all kinds of content; not just computer output data. The trick for a company in this business is to figure out a way to create a true recurring revenue model by solving these problems. The microfiche and print were both ongoing operational expenses. How can the solution provider in the digital business create a similar model; only at a lower cost and with greater value? Looks like RSD may have established a niche in the educational vertical.
